The track from here on in is very well trodden and packed
down. Much faster running
although rather bumpy. We
also met quite a few people, heading in both directions.
Finally came face to face with ‘Big
Red’ the infamous sand dune, the challenge of the Simpson Desert.
Fred (Larry) had several brave attempts to go over it from the
west side. He got most of
the way to the top but ran out of horsepower at the crucial last moment.
Perhaps he would have made it if we weren’t carrying ridiculous
amounts of fuel and water! Took
the wimp out detour track and had no problems reaching the crest of ‘Big
Red’ from the East. First
attempt, no worries.
After playing around we shooed the flies out of the cab and hit the gravel road to Birdsville Pub. Great evening meal smorgasbord. I feel like a weeble now! |
