Early start had to be at Tourist Office by 8am for
tour of the worlds largest single
cut, open cast iron ore mine run by BHP.
Fred was well impressed by all the huge machinary!
It was an extremely interesting tour.
Apparently they have an opening for an Environmental Scientist at
the moment.
Following the tour, we set off to explore some of the areas 4WD attractions. First, we drove up our second mountain, Mt Newman. A 4WD track of sorts goes most of the way to the summit. The further up you go, the more difficult the driving lots of rock hopping and scrabbling. We made it most of the way up the track and had a quick hike on foot to the top. Once again, spectacular views. Descended without incident and made tracks towards Eagle Rock Pool and Falls, down an extremely washed out gravel road (presumably abandoned to become another 4WD track). Had lunch at the pool and then continued onto the Falls beautiful, although the light was wrong for a decent photo. 2 waterfalls (one 60m high) both running set one above the other in a high sided gorge. Sheer cliffs down to 2 beautiful pools. More gentle wooded gorge downstream of the falls. Eventually returned to Newman to spend the night. |
