Had a brief snorkel at Turquoise Bay on our way out of
Cape Range National Park. Still
very windy. Saw turtle
again – taking a chunk out of a jelly fish.
Travelled out of the park, through Exmouth (still too choppy for
dive or whale shark trip) and back onto the North West Coastal Highway.
The road we had singled out as a shortcut and more interesting route to Onslow was closed so we had to stick to the conventional tarred highway. The land either side of Onslow road is dotted with large termite mounds – it looks like a city of African mud huts! We didn’t actually go to Onslow itself, but turned off towards ‘Old Onslow’ – the town was moved to its current location around 1925. We set up camp at 3 Mile Pool on the Ashburton River and then drove to have a ‘sticky beak’ at Old Onslow town site – only the Police station, Gaol and cemetary remain! Not a whole lot to see. |
