Had an early start and arrived at the Turkish/Iran border at 7am (8:30 Iranian time).  Once we had found where to go, getting through the border formalities was not too much of a problem – certainly not the nightmare described by the Guidebooks.  Once into the Iranian side, we were taken under the wing of a marvellously helpful gentleman from the tourist office.  He made sure that everything ran smoothly and that we saw the right people and had the correct papers stamped (Many thanks to you, Sir (sorry we didn’t get your name)).  We were through both countries systems within 2 hours.

However, we still had one final hurdle to overcome – the office for purchasing 3rd party insurance was firmly padlocked.  We asked a few people if they knew when it would open – each time: “In 1 hour, in 1 hour”.  So we waited.  1 hour passed – still not open!  We asked some more people – the guys in the shop next door.  They assured us it would open at 12 and offered us some tea.  So we drank and chatted (difficult as they spoke virtually not English and we spoke no Farsi) and the clock ticked.  12 o’ clock arrived – still no sign.  “12:30 they assured us.  At 12:30 we gave up and hoped that we would see an insurance office in the next town (which we didn’t!).  We drove through the town and out into the countryside.

Mountainous, rocky and brown (where there wasn’t any snow).  Everything has a very ‘Middle Eastern’ feel about it.  Somewhat dry and deserty with ‘squat’ blockmud houses dotted amoungst the hills.  We drove until Miyaneh where we found a hotel for the night.
