Left camping site after a good breakfast of porridge (Fred is now making up for all the years of not cooking and is cooking all of the time!). We stopped after about ½ an hour of driving and went for a brisk 4 km walk through the woods. Sky was a little grey but no snow/rain yet (very windy whennot in shelter of trees). Shame that we don’t have a sledge. Perhaps we should invest in one. Continued driving through beautiful wooded, snowy hills with picturesque villages. Landscape gradually gave way to more open, less undulating agricultural land. In addition, the weather took a turn for the worse and strong winds and heavy snow accompanied us making driving miserable and the thought of doing anything outside undesirable. We decided to head for Franfurt and spend a day or so there exploring. We drove into Frankfurt as everyone was leaving for the weekend. Rather by luck than good management (as we had no map of the city) we managed to find a hotel with a carpark and checked in for 2 nights. Unfortunately, it transpired that my attempt o render potential parking issues we might have with an oversized vehicle into the German language had not succeeded and we were unable to squeeze into their underground carpark (max headroom 1.9m). Fortunately, a space appeared on the one-way street ourside the hotel and so a spot of rapid reversing (the wrong way up the street) secured our place. A brief glance at the parking sign indicated that parking was allowed at the weekends. Further inspection suggested that it might only be applicable to residents with the relevant permits. We chose to ignore this part and plead ignorance if the worst came to the worst. After all, the hotel staff had told us that we should park there. A great evening meal was had in a kind of German ‘theme’ pub. Everything was stereotypically German. Naturally we both had meals including Sauerkraut and Wurst. |
