Continued on our journey through barren
hills onto flat
plains of the desert. Sparse
brown/olive vegetation and gravelly surface (no sand dunes here!).
Periodically passed oasis towns.
Green lawns and tree lined avenues.
Agriculture spreading out in a circle from each town.
Passed through Yazd at lunchtime (saw lots of hotels) and decided
to continue towards Rafsanjan and Kerman.
Arrived at outskirts of Rafsanjan and decided to stop for night. Drove into centre (terrifying driving – traffic everywhere, in all directions and no rules!) but couldn’t find hotels (several mentioned in Lonely Planet). Freds nerves frayed by driving – decided to leave town centre chaos and head for Kerman. Managed to get onto new, unfinished road in dark and missed turn to Kerman! Turned around after 15 km (refuelled – we can get 420 miles out of one tank) and went back to find it. Arrived at Kerman without incident. First hotel not interested – said he was full – but it was deserted! Fortunately, there was another hotel directly opposite. Extremely nice. Manager very enthusiastic and spoke good English. Tea and biscuits on arrival – very welcome. |
