We left Belfort and headed across Burgandy and the French
countryside towards Dijon. We
stopped in the old village of Beze
for lunch and took a wander to visit “La Source et Les Grottes”.
La Source is
where the River Beze pours out of the ground, emerging from a
subterranean river (a resurgence).
As I understood it from the signs, the river didn’t exist
before (ie it didn’t go underground and then reemerge) but is formed
from subterranean water, collected from several plateaux, converging and
emerging as the river in Beze. It
was an impressive sight with the water bubbling and boiling in the pool
where the river starts. It
is not a small river by any means.
The water steamed in the cold air to add to the effect.
We left Beze and travelled on to Dijon where we checked into a motel and then set off to explore the town. We parked someway out and just headed towards the older buildings and church spires in the hope that we would end up in the right area. It worked, and we found our way to the old buildings and streets mentioned in the guide book: le Palais des Ducs and the old merchant houses. We felt a little peckish as we headed out of town and stopped for a bite to eat at a creperie. Defininitely to be recommended. |
