Fred has recovered enough to require a McBreakfast stop at Maastricht. He must be getting back to normal. The Belgium-Dutch border was so well signed that we didn’t actually notice that we were in a different country until Fred commented that there were a large number of Dutch cars around. We kept a better look out for the Dutch-German border and managed to notice when we needed a different currency. This corner of Germany/Holland lives up to the Dutch stereotype – the highest hills or undulations that we have seen are mole hills. Agriculture in this area is noticeably more high-tech and orderly than that seen in France. In particularly, there appears to be a great deal of investment in new glasshouses. We arrived in Deventer in the early afternoon without a map. We rang Thuy just to let her know that we would be descending on her. She enthusiastically suggested that we drive to her work to pick up a house key. We found a service station to put us on the right track and also discovered that the town conveniently has extremely good maps on boards all over the place. Found where Thuy works without a problem, although we did go to the wrong door initially. Caught up with Thuy a little (she hasn’t changed at all!) and then drove off to find her house. We were somewhat confused by Thuy’s initial directions and ended up at the wrong end of town. Fortunately, we came across a handy map board and managed to get back on track. Spent the time before Thuy returned from work sorting out e-mail etc. Thuy cooked for us and we spent ages catching up. She still has as much energy as ever. Thuy’s brother turned up just in time to eat so he ate in place of Jurgen (Thuy’s other half) who was late in getting home. Later, when Jurgen had returned and eaten, we went out in Deventer. Had a brief tour of the town square and parts of the old town – very pretty. Followed by a few drinks in a pub. |
