VVVV cold overnight – heavy frost – everything has a
thick layer of white (not snow). Forgot
to check the thermometer first thing.
It took a brave person to get undressed for the showers (in an
unheated, open building) and once in it was difficult to get out. Very enjoyable showers though – despite the fact that my
hair froze before I had a chance to brush it!
We caught a boat to Venice directly from the campsite and only purchased a single ticket as the last return boat was at 17:10 and we were unsure if we would make it. In the event we did, but the boat driver was in such a hurry to get home that we were never asked for tickets or money! We arrived at the quay Zattare (or something like that) and somehow managed to miss the tourist information office so we just headed in an exciting looking direction and enjoyed the back streets, narrow canals, old houses and churches (some in need of much renovation) of Venice. I think that we managed to cover most of the island just by meandering. We eventually stumbled into the Piazza San Marco. Quite easy to find if you follow the trail of pigeons and tourists! We admired the Basilica di San Marco and looked around inside attempting to identify the items pillaged from Constantinople (according to our guidebook!). We also went up the Campanile tower and Fred took some excellent photos looking down on the city. We continued our explorations of Venice until we were both exhausted and caught the last boat back to the campsite. We spent an enjoyable evening in the company of Richard Priest, who was having a vacation from his post in Germany in a very smart campervan. Mnay thanks for the warmth, company and beer! |
