We arose early to catch the best of the day and to beat
the tourists. We took in
the the sites without a guide book and meandered around the areas that
we remembered from last night as well as any part that looked
interesting. I think that
Fred was rather ‘overcultured’ by the time we had finished wandering
around old buildings, churches and looking at paintings, statues and
carvings.
The two notable highlights were the Church of San Lorenzo and of course the Duomo, the 4th largest church in the world, apparently. There is a magnificent Dome up one end which is decorated with some fairly disturbing paintings! We went up the ‘463 steps’ (we lost count) of the Cupola to view the fresco from both galleries and then contiued to the top for magnificent, although slightly smoggy, views of the city and surrounding hills. We left Florence around lunch time and once again hopped onto the Autostrade, this time in the direction of Venice. We arrived at the campsite at Fusina, on the mainland, in time to do some washing before tea and to watch a couple of episodes of Black Adder (many thanks to Ben and Nicki). Venice tomorrow. |
