Spent the day alternating between driving through small
and very scenic coastal
fishing villages and a more inland route.
We seemed to zigzag rather more than necessary.
Sometime, mid-afternoon, we crossed int the State of Goa. Police at the checkpoint were keen to see all documentation, including drivers licenses! The first time that we have been asked to show them in India. Navigating in Goa is somewhat easier than in most Indian States – all of the signposts are in the Roman alphabet, rather than in Hindi. Probably a result of Goa being a Portugese colony at some stage. This made finding Arambol, also known as Harmal, a delight. Arambol is a peaceful fishing village that is starting to be taken over by tourism. Despite this, it is idyllic. Coconut palms surround our hotel (the Ave Maria) which is only a couple of hundred metres from a wonderfully long, sandy beach lapped by the warm ocean. The small cafes along the shore serve beautifully fresh fish, chilled beers and cocktails, allowing full appreciation of the sunset. I think that we could grow to like this place. |
